Alaska

Status of Abortion:

Legal

In the 1997 case, Planned Parenthood of the Great Nw. v. State, the Alaska Supreme Court ruled that the right to murder preborn children is protected by the State’s right to privacy. Abortion remains completely legal in the state.

Abolition History:

State Rep. David Eastman and former State Rep. Chris Kurka have introduced legislation that would abolish abortion in the state every session since 2017. Eastman has also filed legislation over the years to impeach Alaska judges for "Malfeasance includes exercising legislative power.”

Eastman and Kurka’s bills have faced opposition from Democrats as well as pro-life leaders. The pro-life group Alaska Family Action has publicly opposed Eastman’s efforts, and even worked to unseat Eastman in the 2020 election.
