On the same day that God demonstrated that He has the ability to blot out the sun, Donald Trump demonstrated that he would rather spit in God’s face than bow the knee.
For context, Trump released a statement about his position on abortion, where he articulated a functionally pro-choice message to the states.
“The states will determine by vote or legislation or perhaps both, and whatever they decide must be the law of the land. Many states will be different. Many will have a different number of weeks or some will [be] more conservative than others, and that’s what they will be. At the end of the day, this is all about the will of the people.” - Donald Trump
Catch that? “It’s all about the will of the people.” Put another way, it’s about the choice of the people. If we were to imagine that America was a small, fifty-person nation with a single government, Trump argues for the position that abortion should be left to each of those fifty people’s individual choice. This is no surprise, though, because in a sense, the Pro-Life movement is itself pro-choice, because although they want to slowly chip away at methods, they will always leave the choice of abortion itself up to the mother, prohibiting her from receiving the just penalty for her murderous actions.
Trump also, as he has been doing for the past month, gave lip-service to IVF, rape & incest exceptions, and the idea that we need to compromise on abortion in order to win the upcoming election.
How is it that Trump is comfortable making these statements, even though he knows it goes directly against the position of his evangelical base? It’s simple, he knows they’ll bite their tongues and go along with it anyways, because they’re too afraid of four more years of Biden. They won’t like it, but they’ll swallow the pill and go along with the program.
Yet, imagine a world with me, where Christians didn’t bite their tongue and go along? Imagine a world where Christians said, “Trump, you had our support, but you don’t anymore. You’re going to have to earn our votes this time. We’re willing to withstand four more years of Biden, come what may, because the cataclysmic judgment of God if we sacrifice children one more time is a far worse outcome.”
Do you know what would most likely happen? Trump would support the abolition of abortion in a heartbeat.
Trump needs the evangelical vote to win in November, but evangelicals are too cowardly to leverage that fact. We have the authority, through Christ as our head, to turn the heads of kings. (Proverbs 21:1) We have been commanded to exercise that authority in the Great Commission, by teaching the nations all God has commanded. (Matthew 28:19-20)
So, I humbly propose a mission for evangelicals. #YouDontGetMyVoteYET. Trump has plenty of time until November, and if we were to actually use the prophetic voice of the church toward the abolition of abortion, he would have no choice but to listen. Maybe he would be too prideful to go back on his word, maybe he wouldn’t. Let’s leave that up to God, as we do what we can to be faithful with the authority God has given us.
Why have Christians been so unwilling to relinquish their support of Trump over this issue? Giving them the benefit of the doubt, they may have convinced themselves that some progress is better than no progress. Yet, Trump’s recent statements have proven that without any correction, there would be no progress towards abolition under his second term! He believes that the legal state of abortion at this moment is the optimal one. “Let them choose for themselves.”
Removing my benefit of the doubt, it could be that many Christians are simply apathetic towards abortion to varying degrees. They have told themselves that Trump’s weakness on abortion is okay, thanks to the other benefits of his presidency. These Christians simply don’t understand what time it is. They don’t understand that this country hangs by a thread over the fiery pits of destruction, not because of Biden, or Kamala Harris, or Nancy Pelosi, but because we Christians have failed to tear down the high places in our land.
So, we need to be saying with one unified voice, “Trump, you haven’t earned our vote. You will not win in November, unless you do what’s right and support abolition. You still have plenty of time to earn it.”
