Indiana

Status of Abortion:

Legal

for the mother. Sometimes for the physicians.

In 2022, after the Dobbs decision, Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb called a special session to address abortion. State Senator Sue Glick (R) authored SB1, which was passed into law. It provides mothers immunity in the murder of their own children, meaning that self-managed abortion is legal in the state. The law prohibits physicians from performing abortions in most cases, with exceptions such as rape, incest, lethal fetal abnormality diagnosis, and risks to the mother’s life or health.

Abolition History:

State Rep. Curt Nisly has filed the Protection at Conception Act, which would have abolished abortion, every year since 2017.
