Senator Dusty Deevers Files Abolition of Abortion Act. The Left Panics

Last week, new Oklahoma State Senator Dusty Deevers introduced a slate of nine bills beginning with SB1729, the Abolition of Abortion Act. The bill's primary function is amending state homicide code to remove the exceptions for abortion.

Section 691.
A. Homicide is the killing of one human being by another.
B. As used in this section, “human being” includes an unborn child, as defined in Section 1-730 of Title 63 of the Oklahoma Statutes.
C. Homicide shall not include:
1. Acts which cause the death of an unborn child if those acts were committed during a legal abortion to which the pregnant woman consented; or
1. 2. Acts which are committed pursuant to the usual and customary standards of medical practice during diagnostic testing or therapeutic treatment.
D. Under no circumstances shall the mother of the unborn child be prosecuted for causing the death of the unborn child unless the mother has committed a crime that caused the death of the unborn child.

These changes would make abortion homicide as opposed to the current pro-life "bans" which regulate abortion within health care code. They would also close the loophole that allows for self-managed abortion, a practice which is rampant in pro-life states that have supposedly banned abortion.

Ever since his Republican primary victory on October 10, left-wing media has been hounding Deevers, with Right Wing Watch leading the way. They've written four separate articles featuring clips of Deevers from interviews and blasting him as a radical extremist for his consistent, Christian views on abortion, pornography, IVF, and no-fault divorce. Other left-wing outlets including Mother Jones, Daily Kos, Newsweek, and The Guardian picked up Right Wing Watch's clips and ran with them, ginning up fear of Deevers among their readers.

More recently, the New York Post, Jezebel, and Reason have blasted the legislation introduced last week by Deevers, with an emphasis on SB1976, a bill to abolish pornography.

Deevers, who will speak at the Abolition Day Rally on February 6th, is not fazed by the attacks. On the contrary, he and other abolitionists can find encouragement in the frightened tone struck by some of the leftist coverage such as the article from The Guardian expressing fear of the exponentially growing Abolitionist Movement.

Deevers’ use of the term “abolish abortion” is no mere rhetorical flourish. On his campaign website, Deevers has identified himself as an 'abortion abolitionist' – an adherent of a hardline, fringe segment of the anti-abortion movement that, in Oklahoma and elsewhere...

"Over the last several years, 'abortion abolitionists' and their ideology have quietly amassed popularity in churches, state legislatures and online. Several abolitionist organizations filed an amicus brief in the decision that overturned Roe. Abolitionists Rising – which features a video of Deevers on its website – has almost 200,000 subscribers on YouTube, with at least one video with more than half a million views."

For the record, our most popular YouTube video has more than 6 million views, but when it comes to leftist rags like The Guardian, we'll take a compliment where we can get it.

More to the point, they are right to fear the speed at which the Abolitionist Movement is accelerating into the mainstream. In just seven years, we have gone from a few hundred loosely affiliated abolitionists around the country to a movement that is changing the cultural and political landscape, driving cultural conversations, electing good men to office, and introducing bills to abolish abortion in 15 states.

The Abolition of Abortion Act will be coauthored by Deevers' fellow abolitionist in the Senate Warren Hamilton, and likely by a few other Senators as well. The bill awaits an assignment to committee, with the likely destination being the Health and Human Services committee. Be ready to make phone calls and emails to the committee members.

Also, be making arrangements now for the Abolition Day rally to support the Abolition of Abortion Act on February 6th at 10AM at the Oklahoma State Capitol. We hope to see you there!
