Louisiana

Status of Abortion:

Legal

for mothers.

Illegal

for abortionists.

Upon the overturn of Roe, Louisiana began to enforce the State’s trigger law which threatens abortionists with up to 10 years in prison and a $100,000 fine for performing an abortion. The law specifies that “This penalty shall not apply to the female who has an abortion,” effectively legalizing self-managed abortion in the state.

Abolition History:

State Rep. Danny McCormick filed the first bill to completely abolish abortion in Louisiana in 2022. The bill passed committee on a 7-2 vote, at which point the national pro-life groups got involved to oppose the bill. Nearly all of the pro-life legislators who voted for the bill in committee switched their vote on the House floor and opposed it.
